What’s the Best Way to Protect My Wellhead?

What's the Best Way to Protect My Wellhead? Most of a typical water well is constructed underground. But, there is one critical component that sits atop the ground.

Today, we will get to know the wellhead a bit better and understand how to protect and maintain one of the most important components of your well.

What is a Wellhead?

Much like your head sits on top of your body, a wellhead is an apparatus that sits on top of a well. The wellhead is constructed of sturdy PVC to shield the well and ensure a fresh, clean drinking water supply. To get a better idea, see the anatomy of a well system.

Maintaining the Wellhead

As the “front line” of your entire well system, the wellhead should be routinely inspected by well owners as a crucial and important practice. Feel free to modify or repair it, as you feel comfortable/skillful to do, and do not hesitate to call on your local water well experts to undertake larger construction projects or to properly seal an abandoned well.

Mowing and general work around your well can be hazardous, be cautious. While some wellheads are marked with a small building or structure, others are capped pipe protruding from the ground and are much less visible.

The wellhead can be damaged by lawn equipment and other machinery. Water sources may become contaminated by pollutants and chemicals. Well blockages can occur and pathogens can be introduced into the water from leaves, grass clippings, and even snow build up.

Well Location is Key

While planting in the vicinity of a well that is already dug, or looking for a place to dig a new well, be especially observant of the land.

A well should be one full foot or more above grade. Ensure that the adjacent ground is sloped away from the well to prevent surface water from pooling in or draining into the well system.
